A Dreamt Apple Prototype Goose Chase

I had a wild dream last night which involved me being in school and having to upend my day to find a lost Apple prototype device which had been loaned to me that I had completely forgotten about. I recall it involved, at one point, riding in a massive SUV with Idris Elba as he drove very aggressively. It ended up with me reminding them about "Find my phone" and them looking up the device's location.

Excellent analysis of Sam Bankman-Fried's legal situation

12/27/2022 8:35 am | : 1 min.

Honestly, I don't watch a lot of LegalEagle's videos. Not for any reason of his, but just that I tend to not care about the legal depth of content he covers, I am usually fine with the upper level of awareness and insight I gain from my online reading. But, I was curious for more about the FTX and SBF's situation, so I found this video to be very informative about it all. He does a fantastic job breaking down the charges against him and the other leaders charged.

One thing I feel isn't being suitably touted in the media is how you don't see ANY Democratic leaders in government running to SBF's defense, the way you would if it were a Republican-supporting donor facing similar issues.

Southwest's woes are due to not maintaining their digital systems

12/27/2022 8:46 am | : 1 min.

Southwest providing a very visible business lesson in the costs of technical debt. Technical debt refers to the increasing cost of managing technology as it falls behind. From the sounds of it, Southwest had a system which "worked" and thus they kept kicking the can down the street for updating their system.

This weather system this past week finally revealed the level to which their technical debt had left them completely unable to catch up and maintain their system.

Now, the question is, will their losses from these days - as well as any fines which the government might levy as punishment for their mismanagement, prove out to be less than what they would have been paying to update and maintain a modern system? That will be the telling business lesson.

(2014) "Choosing Secure Passwords"

12/27/2022 12:27 pm | : 1 min.

Bruce Schneier, who I've linked to and discussed before, has a post from 2014 about choosing a good password.

My advice is to take a sentence and turn it into a password. Something like "This little piggy went to market" might become "tlpWENT2m". That nine-character password won't be in anyone's dictionary. Of course, don't use this one, because I've written about it. Choose your own sentence—something personal.

Here are some examples:

  • WIw7,mstmsritt… = When I was seven, my sister threw my stuffed rabbit in the toilet.
  • Wow…doestcst = Wow, does that couch smell terrible.
  • Ltime@go-inag~faaa! = Long time ago in a galaxy not far away at all.
  • uTVM,TPw55:utvm,tpwstillsecure = Until this very moment, these passwords were still secure.

Why our economy favors ultra wealthy existing

A fantastic write up with awesome interactive elements that delves into the Yard-sale model. I especially like the visualization midway through which explores the impact of wealth redistribution's impact on the system.

Interestingly, there isn't a good Wikipedia entry for it. But there are some good additional reference sources at the end of the linked article.

Musing on RSS

It is hard to understate how much happier I am now that my RSS feed reader updates throughout the day automatically. Previously I had tried to get it working but couldn't, and so had to manually refresh which took a few minutes and left me with a mountain of articles to read and skim.

I hope more sites bring RSS back next year, it's a shame how many I am finding these days without accessible feeds.
