Monday morning rolling start
Overall we kept it a fairly quiet weekend. Friday night was spent hanging out with friends, but after that Katie's cold reared up and so it was a fairly chill weekend. Saturday we were supposed to go to a Sounders game (which they ended up drawing) but with Katie not feeling well we decided to stay home. Sunday we mainly binged ABC's Will Trent, which features a dyslexic detective and I gave Elwood a much needed bath.
Now it's back to work for another week. This Monday morning is serenaded by the best of Led Zeppelin after I had Immigrant Song in my head.
20 Years Since the US Invaded Iraq
I was wondering why my RSS feed was besieged by Iraq retrospectives and I finally learned it was because today is the 20th anniversary of the invasion.
We were sold lies in the name of national security. We toppled a tyrant under these falsehoods. And it was only the beginning of our prolonged presence in the middle east to secure our access to oil and in the name of freedom.
Ken Thompson on his music box project
Ken Thompson is one of the creators of Unix and here he is giving a talk about a longterm project of his for making a music machine. It's a good journey through the evolution of technology through this ongoing project.
I had, back in college, the vision for a similar project which I had called 'Ainur' after the singing demigods of Tolkien mythology. At the time, the idea was a portable computer which I could take to parties or conventions and it would run a wifi mp3 streaming service entirely autonomously, and also be available as a file sharing FTP server. It's still an idea I have, and would probably be Raspberry Pi built these days - but in the era of music streaming, it feels like a less and less needed project.
