I spent yesterday trying to get the DNS change needed to verify a domain name account change for Bluesky. The issues were all on my end, but I eventually figured it out.
The biggest issue was that I forgot that I no longer managed DNS for this domain with the domain registrar, and so when I made a change there it wasn't actually a public thing. Once I realized that, I made the change on my own domain and kept waiting for it to proliferate, only to realize this morning I had typoed the subdomain for the DNS verification. It's 'atproto' but I had typed 'atphoto'.
As soon as I realized that, it was just a minute before I could get the domain verified.
Blackfeet First Nation release 30 buffalo back into wild
I highly recommend clicking through as there is a video of them leaving their enclosure and running off into the plain.
As he watched the half-ton buffalo jump in the waist-high grass at Chief Mountain, Blackfeet Councilman Lauren Monroe Jr. said he thought of his ancestors.
"I thought of the demise they went through," he said. "If they were to understand that our language, our culture, our buffalo would come back one day … it was absolutely momentous as a Blackfeet to be on our land within our sovereignty and do this. We're the leaders. We're choosing our future as we see it."
On Monday, the Blackfeet Nation transferred 30 wild buffalo (iinnii in the Blackfoot language) to tribal lands near Chief Mountain, an area steeped in Blackfeet cultural significance in the northwest corner of the reservation bordering Glacier National Park. The buffalo were brought to the Blackfeet from Alberta in 2016 after testing negative for diseases. In the seven years since, the tribe has been growing the captive herd in preparation for the release.
The Fate of Zunturasan
From 3 years ago on my Facebook page:
Last night, my Dwarf Fortress "Zunturasan" came to a joyous end after I succumbed to a goblin and troll invasion. I sat confidently behind my iron bulwarks and went on with my business assuming the monsters outside would tire and head home.
Little did I know that the goblin which we knew was stealing things and sneaking away was apparently hard at work burrowing a tunnel in for the invading force. Suddenly my notifications were filled with notifications that dwarves were being killed and I found that not only had they gotten into the fortress but that they had snuck in into the middle of the residences, giving them immediate access to dozens of dwarves.
I had not built a military, relying instead on good walls. And so the fortress fell, countless riches lost the greedy hands of the goblins.
Bummed Zunturasan ended, it was the fortress I had done the most with. I had made it to magma and was in the process of moving the fortress deep into the earth. But alas, it was not to be.
And so I shall begin anew, hard at work on building a truly great dwarf fortress.
This time I think I'll work on military a bit, lol
I haven't played much Dwarf Fortress in a while. I have the newer visual version purchased, I just need to sit down and play it. Maybe I'll do that some later this week.
Progress in fighting maternal mortality after child birth
A trial of a set of interventions to manage postpartum haemorrhage, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found a 60% reduction in heavy bleeding.
Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) - defined as the loss of more than 500 mL of blood within 24 hours after birth - is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. It affects an estimated 14 million women each year and results in around 70 000 deaths – mostly in low and middle-income countries - equivalent to 1 death every 6 minutes.
"Postpartum haemorrhage is scary, not always predictable, but absolutely treatable. Nonetheless, its impacts around the world are tragic," said Dr Pascale Allotey, Director of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research at WHO and head of the United Nations' Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP). "No woman should fear for her life when giving birth. Effective solutions to tackle postpartum bleeding need to be available and accessible so that all women can experience a safe birth and a healthy future with their families."
The study, which involved over 200 000 women in four countries, found that objectively measuring blood loss using a simple, low-cost collection device called a 'drape' and bundling together WHO-recommended treatments - rather than offering them sequentially - resulted in dramatic improvements in outcomes for women. Severe bleeding – when a woman loses more than a litre of blood after birth - was reduced by 60%, and they were less likely to lose their life.
"In Bothell, they’re already staking claim to spots on July 4 parade route"
My friend Scott was actually just telling me about this when he came over before our party today. Funny to see it also covered in the Seattle Times.
Small town living is a hell of a thing.
Another party with extreme gezellig
Every year we host two events, a 4th of July BBQ and then a Christmas party. Today was the BBQ and it went fantastic, as always. It's such a wonderful social event. At one point, as I was grilling, I just sat on the edge of my porch and listened to all the people chatting - basking in the awareness of the event around me.
It's one of my favorite times during the year and it truly fulfills the feeling of gezellig in me. I feel so content and so happy and so fulfilled from these gatherings.
Looking forward to Christmas.
