Olympics Time

With yesterday's Opening Ceremonies, it is time for me to enjoy one of my favorite things - endless sport coverage from the Olympics. Currently I'm watching the coverage of swimming and gymnastics, and before that was a bit of biking (go Dygert!) and USA vs Greece women's water polo.

Olympic and Paralympic mascots

My friend Graham does these quirky and charming style videos. As he takes great length to explain, he did previous ones just about the Olympic logos and Paralympic logos, a while ago. And this is the third video in the series.

Athletes to swim in Paris' Seine during the Olympics if they can get it cleaned up in time

The opening ceremony for the Summer Olympics in Paris next year will be an unusual one. Rather than taking to an Olympic stadium for the festivities, a flotilla of boats will ferry the athletes down the river Seine past landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the recovering Notre-Dame Cathedral. Even more unusual, soon after, some of those athletes will be competing in the very same waters.

That is, as long as the city succeeds in its ambitious cleanup plan to make the water safe to swim in.

Out walking her dogs, she found an Olympic gold medal on the ground

Maria Carrillo stepped outside the back door of her office to walk her two dogs one evening when she noticed a plastic fast-food bag had been dumped on her property.

Carrillo put the medal around her neck to see what it would feel like to wear Olympic gold, she said. But it never crossed her mind to keep it.

[...]

“I came to this country from Mexico 30 years ago and cleaned houses to earn enough money to start my own business,” she said. “I know what it is like to work hard to achieve a dream. The person who lost this medal deserved to have it back.”

[...]

Police checked their files and told the couple that the gold medal belonged to Jordyn Poulter, the starting setter of the 2020 U.S. Women’s Volleyball Team. On May 25, she had reported it stolen from her car while it was parked in her garage in Anaheim.

The moral of this story is two-fold: Always do the right thing. And, don't leave an Olympic Gold Medal in your car, even if it is in your garage.

Tokyo WILL host the Olympics

It's a less troubling thing now that the vaccines have begun to roll out, but it is still hard to believe we will see the Olympics this year. If it happens, I will be very excited at the prospect of working from home and watching day-long broadcasts.

That sounds like a terrible plan. And I say that as an Ex-Floridian.

Japan reportedly is going to cancel the Olympics due to Covid

Makes total sense, but still very sad to see one of these global moments officially be canceled because of this fucking disease.

Update: Now reports are coming out denying this report. We'll have to wait and see what fully happens.
